Body and Face Tracking in VR, 2026 — How Far It Has Actually Come
Around social VR in particular, more people are building full-body tracking setups to drive their avatars. As of 2026 the options for body and face tracking have widened considerably. From IMU trackers in the low hundreds of dollars to software that runs on nothing but a camera and AI, there is now something for most budgets and purposes.
From my research, the HaritoraX 2 (¥39,999, about $265) is the balanced choice for a first set, and starting with free camera tracking is the realistic first move.
This article lays out the current options for both, and goes into how far a camera alone can take you. (Prices are Japanese retail as of April 2026; ¥1,000 is roughly $6.70. Availability differs by country.)
The overall map
Part 1: full-body tracking
IMU trackers compared
Sensors worn on the body (IMU = inertial measurement unit, a small part that measures tilt and motion). This is the most common approach.
| Product | Price | Tracking points | Battery | Base stations | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HaritoraX 2 | ¥39,999 (~$265) | 6 (up to 11 with expansions) | about 50–80 hours | Not required | 17g chest/waist, 6g thigh |
| HaritoraX 2 Pro | ¥53,899 (~$360) | 8 (foot sensors included) | about 50–80 hours | Not required | 17g chest/waist, 6g thigh |
| SlimeVR Butterfly | about ¥42,000 (~$280) for six | 6–17 | about 48 hours | Not required | under 10g each |
| Rebocap | about ¥30,000 (~$200) | 15 | — | Not required | One unit worn on the spine |
| PICO Motion Tracker | ¥11,800 (~$79) a pair | 2–3 | — | Not required (PICO only) | Light |
HaritoraX 2 / 2 Pro (Shiftall)
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Trackers developed by Shiftall in Japan.
- Magnetometer correction against drift. The claim is “no drift after an hour of play"
- Connects over BLE and a proprietary radio. No base stations
- The base set is six points: chest, waist, thighs, shins. An elbow expansion set (about ¥13,900 / $93) or a foot set adds more
- Support in Japanese is thorough, which has made it the default among Japanese VRChat users
Taking the reviews together, the HaritoraX 2 is what most people pick for a first set. Around $265, and the setup is described as relatively simple.
SlimeVR Butterfly (shipping expected late October 2026)
Open-source IMU trackers. The new Butterfly generation is remarkably thin and light at under 7mm and under 10g.
- A proprietary 2.4GHz protocol (not WiFi or BLE) for low latency
- Open source in both hardware and software
- The crowdfunding base set (six Butterflies) starts at $279
- Crowdfunding opened in February 2026. Shipping has slipped from August to late October
Not obtainable yet, but on paper it looks like the next generation’s front-runner.
PICO Motion Tracker
PICO headsets only, but two units on your ankles is a genuine entry into full-body tracking. At about $79 a pair it is the cheapest class there is. A waist tracker (about $39) was added in April 2025. It does not work with other headsets.
Vive Ultimate Tracker
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Price | About $689 for the 3+1 kit (about ¥90,000 in Japan) |
| Method | Optical, using built-in cameras (6DoF: position in three axes plus rotation in three) |
| Battery | About 7 hours |
| Weight | 94g |
| Base stations | Not required |
The key difference from IMU trackers is that they do not drift. Because they recognise the space with their own cameras, position does not creep. Accuracy does fall in a dark room.
At about $610–690 for the 3+1 kit it is expensive, but user reports value being free of the stress of drift.
Full-body tracking with a camera alone: how far does it go?
For anyone who does not want to strap things to their body, or wants to try without spending. As AI has improved, solutions that estimate body movement from camera footage have multiplied.
| Method | What you need | Quality | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| VRChat Selfie Expression | Phone or webcam | Fine, upper body only | Free |
| Driver4VR | Kinect / webcam / phone | Limited to fine | Purchased on Steam |
| MediaPipe VR | One webcam | Limited, experimental | Free (open source) |
| Moverse Capture | OAK-1W depth camera (included) | Unknown, unreleased | TBD (shipping expected September 2026) |
VRChat Selfie Expression (official, free)
An official VRChat feature. The desktop version launched for VRChat+ in March 2025 and opened to all users that September. A phone or webcam tracks face, head, eyes, arms, hands and fingers.
- Usable in desktop mode
- The lower body (legs and feet) is not tracked
- User reports call the quality reasonable and adequate for casual use
- A good free way to start today
Driver4VR
Software that turns a Microsoft Kinect (360 or One), a webcam or a phone camera into SteamVR trackers.
- A Kinect connection is the most stable. A used Kinect (about $20–35) makes low-cost full-body tracking possible
- Webcams and phone cameras work too, at lower quality
- Usable with a standalone Quest via OSC (a protocol for sending motion data between applications)
MediaPipe VR Full-Body Tracking (open source)
An open-source project applying Google’s MediaPipe (AI pose estimation) to VRChat.
- Full-body tracking from one webcam
- Entirely free
- Experimental quality. Weak against occlusion (parts of the body being hidden)
Where camera tracking stands
As things are, camera-only tracking is well behind IMU trackers.
- Occlusion (parts of you leaving the camera’s view) drops accuracy frequently
- Latency is higher than with IMU trackers
- The tracking area is limited to the camera’s field of view
That said, AI pose estimation is moving fast and could approach IMU trackers within two or three years. “Try it free first, buy trackers if it takes" is the realistic path.
Quest 3/3S built-in body tracking (IOBT)
The Quest 3 and 3S estimate upper-body movement with their downward-facing cameras (Inside-Out Body Tracking).
- Tracks wrists, elbows, shoulders and torso
- Legs and feet are not tracked
- No extra hardware
- Supported by some titles, such as Bonelab
Not enough to call full-body, but having upper-body movement reflected for no extra outlay is not nothing.
Part 2: face tracking
Built into the headset
| Headset | Eye tracking | Face tracking | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quest Pro | Yes, built in | Yes, built in (IR) | Discontinued, remaining stock only |
| VIVE Focus Vision | Yes, built in | Separate purchase (about ¥14,900 / $100) | About ¥150,000 ($1,000) |
| Quest 3 / 3S | None | None | — |
The Quest Pro covers both eyes and mouth but is discontinued. The VIVE Focus Vision has eye tracking built in, but mouth tracking requires the separately sold Facial Tracker.
The Quest 3 and 3S have no official eye or mouth tracking, and Meta has stated it has no plans for an official add-on.
Add-ons for the Quest 3
| Product | Covers | Price | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper Tracker | Eyes and mouth | Eyes about $80, mouth about $47 | Taobao (Chinese online retail) |
| DIY: EyeTrackVR + Project Babble | Eyes and mouth | Parts, about $20–53 | Build it yourself (soldering and 3D printing) |
Paper Tracker is a Chinese IR camera module that mounts on the Quest 3’s facial interface and runs on the open-source EyeTrackVR and Project Babble software. Quality is reportedly better than expected, but buying means going through Taobao, and the documentation is mostly in Chinese.
DIY means soldering your own IR cameras and LEDs and fitting them into a 3D-printed mount. Parts start around $20. It takes effort, but community support is said to be strong.
Face tracking with a camera (headset off)
With no headset on (desktop mode or VTubing), a camera alone can track your face.
| Method | What you need | Quality | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| iFacialMocap | An iPhone with Face ID | Excellent | About $6 for the app |
| VRCFaceTracking with a webcam | Webcam | Good | Free |
| VSeeFace | Webcam | Good | Free |
iFacialMocap (iPhone)
High-quality face tracking using the iPhone’s TrueDepth camera.
- ARKit-based, covering 52 blendshapes
- Sends to the PC over WiFi, then into VRCFaceTracking
- Not usable while wearing a headset (your face is not visible to the camera)
- Suits desktop VRChat and VTubing
VRCFaceTracking with the FoxyFace module (webcam)
One webcam is said to track about 81% of VRCFT’s parameters.
- Uses MediaPipe and Project Babble neural networks
- Entirely free
- Desktop mode only
The software layer: VRCFaceTracking
In face tracking, VRCFaceTracking (VRCFT) is the hub that nearly every method plugs into.
- Distributed free on Steam
- Modular support for Quest Pro, VIVE, iPhone, webcams, Paper Tracker and more
- Sends to VRChat over OSC
- Works in both VR and desktop mode
Starting with face tracking means installing VRCFT first.

How IMU trackers work, and what drift is
An IMU combines an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The gyroscope measures rotational speed, which integrated over time gives you an angle. But the sensor carries a tiny bias error, and the accumulation of that error is what is called drift.
Accuracy score by tracking method (out of 100)
Accuracy = tracking accuracy 40% + drift resistance 25% + points supported 20% + ease of setup 15%
What wears out before the hardware does
Trackers and headsets last. The parts that touch your face do not. Both body and face tracking involve a lot of movement and therefore sweat, so treat these as replaceable and you will be more comfortable.
The cushion against your face absorbs sweat and degrades. The standard ones are usually fabric, and awkward to wash.
And the lenses burn in sunlight. There are plenty of stories about leaving a headset by a window and coming home to marks on the lenses. Cover them when not in use.
In summary: where things stand in 2026
| Category | Status |
|---|---|
| IMU body tracking | The HaritoraX 2 is the default. High hopes for the SlimeVR Butterfly |
| Optical body tracking | The Vive Ultimate Tracker is the only 6DoF option without base stations |
| Camera body tracking | Still experimental. Usable for the upper body, developing for the whole body |
| Face tracking in VR | The Quest 3 needs an add-on: DIY or Paper Tracker |
| Face tracking on desktop | An iPhone or a webcam with VRCFT is genuinely usable |
Try camera tracking free, buy a HaritoraX 2 if it takes, start face tracking with a webcam. That looks like the most realistic path through 2026.
“Once you have felt your own body move in a virtual world, you cannot go back" is a common sentiment among users.
Product information and prices are as of April 2026, from the Japanese market. The SlimeVR Butterfly has not shipped; the date has slipped from August 2026 to late October.
